Let me start out by saying that these three (including baby Madison!) are troopers!!! To say it was cold during their sunrise maternity session last year would be quite the understatement! Stephanie and I were roommates while at Virginia Tech for a semester. She now lives in Boston, MA with her hubby Justin. Stephanie is from Alexandria, VA and they were planning to come into town for a baby shower Valentine’s Day weekend. She had been following my work for a while now and I’m so glad it worked out to capture some maternity portraits of them to document this exciting season in their lives.
Since it was Valentine’s Day weekend, Ryan and I decided to go up together the day before to explore DC and have a date night. I checked the weather before leaving Richmond… “more frigid temperatures with a blasting northwest wind and a chance of snow are in the forecast.” Guess I better pack those gloves and snow boots!! It snowed the night before their session and covered the ground like a blanket. We met at a local park right on the water just before sunrise. When I stepped outside, wow!!!, it was about 10 degrees but the wind chill from the water made it… let’s just say, freezing! Definitely the coldest environment I’ve ever worked in. Of course, I wanted to make sure that Stephanie was as warm as she could be throughout the session. I told her that I’d keep shooting for as long as she could handle the cold! They would drop their coats… I would shoot for 1-2 minutes… then they’d warm up again! Despite the cold, I stayed focused on the moment and kept the creative juices flowing!
Stephanie and Justin might have been shivering from the cold but the way these two looked at each other would warm you right up!! The excitement they have for their little bundle of joy will give you goosebumps! They patiently waited years for their little miracle. Baby Madison was born just in time for Mother’s Day and I couldn’t be happier for their growing family.
