He was the first to leave the Virginia nest! Back in June, my brother Maury and my sister-in-law, Rachael, moved to Hoboken, NJ — a beautiful town right across from Manhattan along the historic Hudson river. Maury, got a new job at IBM shortly after graduating from Darden business school and they have their first baby (a boy!!) due in October. Yes, they have lots of new and exciting things to be thankful for! They moved into this beautiful waterfront gated community overlooking the Manhattan skyline. Their apartment complex has several pools, a health club, a movie theatre, tennis courts, basketball courts, and more! It’s within walking distance to tons of cute shops and restaurants — a very friendly and safe area, and a great place to raise a family. Once they got settled in… I was eager to visit!!
A few months ago Ryan and I finalized our Labor Day plans and booked train tickets to NYC!! My parents booked train tickets too so the four of us got up early (4AM!!) that Friday to catch our 6AM train out of Richmond and off to NYC we went! This was me and Ryan’s second train ride within the same month (we went up to DC a few weeks earlier for a Nationals game!) — so we felt like we were pros! It was a fairly seamless ride. They have wifi on the train and the seats are pretty comfy. Roughly 6 hours door-to-door which wasn’t bad at all considering it would’ve taken twice that long driving on a long holiday weekend.
When we arrived, I was blown away by the gorgeous view!! They are just far enough away from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan and only a quick ferry ride into the city. We spent the afternoon relaxing by the pool and waited for Maury to get home from work. I enjoyed a delicious (healthy??) NY pizza for lunch!! We went into Hoboken that first night for dinner and ate at Little Town — a cozy, urban, and rustic atmosphere with delicious food!! We decided to take it easy the first night since we had a long weekend ahead of us — and we were pretty tired from a long travel day.
Saturday we got up and headed into the city!! They have a ferry that’s walking distance from their place which is very convenient! The ride took less than 10 minutes and we were on the streets of Manhattan. We headed to Central Park and took some fun impromptu maternity photos. It was so amazing to watch Maury and Rach look at each other — the excitement and love they have for each other is contagious. Rachael was glowing the entire weekend. She was a good sport walking all through Central Park on a hot August day. I was able to capture some good shots in the small timeframe we had (I’ll get more when they visit Richmond in a few weeks!). Afterwards, we scooted back to Hoboken to relax by the pool for a bit before the nighttime shenanigans began. I got to catch up with my cousin, Micah — love her! Saturday night we met up with some close family friends, Chris and Christie. We all headed to the Comedy Cellar — there were roughly a dozen 15 minute stand-up acts. Colin Quinn from SNL was there and was hilarious! We had a corner booth for our group and we laughed the night away!! We had dinner at a nearby French restaurant — the food was incredible! I then took our group to 230 Fifth — the best rooftop bar in NYC!! Amazing views — you feel like you could touch the Empire State Building! We danced the night away — it was an unforgettable night!!
On Sunday, Maury and Rach gave us a tour of the apartment complex and we explored Hoboken. Later that evening we met up with Maury’s Godfather and his sweet family in Manhattan. They live in an incredible home off Park Avenue — amazing views! They treated us to a delicious dinner!! So great to catch up with such great family friends.
Monday morning we packed up and headed off to the train station to head home. It was sad leaving Maury and Rach but they’ll be visiting Richmond in a few weeks. It will be even harder saying goodbye after the baby is born!! We had such a lovely visit. Loved spending time with family and seeing their new home. I even got to feel Maury Jr. kick!!!! Couldn’t be happier for this new chapter in their lives.
