A Wild ONE • Smash Cake

Tomorrow my little Michael man is going to be ONE! We gathered with family and friends this past weekend to celebrate! It was a “Where the Wild Things Are” theme since Michael is going to be a wild ONE! I plan to do a blog post soon to show off all of the cute decorations and fun that was had at his birthday party (which included a gender reveal for baby #2!) but first I wanted to feature his Smash Cake session!! I’ve been so anxious to share all of these images — had to hold off until after his birthday party since we had a bunch on display 🙂

Several weeks ago, we were at the rivah with my family and I knew it would be the perfect location for his Smash Cake session! It’s such a special place for us since we spend as much time as we can there so the Rappahannock River was a beautiful backdrop! I brought along some decorations to go along with the “Where The Wild Things Are” theme and it all came together perfectly! It was a sunrise Smash Cake session (at about 7AM!) since I wanted to shoot it before the sun was going to be too harsh reflecting on the water. Michael was very happy to chow down on some yummy cake for breakfast!

Regarding decorations… my mom already had the red boat at our rivah house and I added a yellow sail (like in the book!), the anchor blanket my Mom already had, I bought the letter board from Hobby Lobby, and the wooden stool I already had from HomeGoods. I ordered his Wild Thing outfit off Amazon (which he also wore at his birthday party and he’ll wear for Halloween). The cake topper and crown I got of Amazon too. I got the cake from Publix grocery store — I would’ve preferred an all white cake since colored icing doesn’t really photograph well but it’s all they had. I grabbed some random sticks to make a tee-pee and voila! We were ready to smash!

I set everything up and captured a few cute shots of him in his costume. I can’t handle the cuteness! As soon as we stripped Michael down to some red shorts and sat him in front of his cake… he went to town! He demolished the entire cake (as he did at his birthday party too!). He was covered in icing and it was adorable! I just love the resulting images — such a fun memory to capture! I had several images printed and on display at his birthday party to go along with the theme. I also decided to print one in a 20×30 size to use as a guestbook that everyone signed at the party — I plan to frame it and put it in his big boy bedroom (since it’s nautical themed!). SO cute! Enjoy browsing some favorites!
